making some soup
serves: two people (can be adjusted)
preptime: not enough time
ingredients:
2 cups of unsaid things, room temperature
1 onion to blame if the tears spill
2 carrots diced, to soften the words
a clove of pride, left mostly whole
4 cups broth, made from those shared nights that won’t return
1 bay leaf, for how it began
a handful of silence
a pinch of salt
1 small potato, for the future we planned was so near
instructions:
begin in silence.let the room warm itself, and do not rush this step.
warm the broth. let it carry the scent of what the two of you built, the nights that were shared in each other’s embrace. the broth won’t return and you must prepare yourself to move on.
slice the onion. your eyes will begin to sting, but let the tears fall, it’s better to let it out than hold it in.
add the onion.
dice the 2 carrots, they will help in softening the words that must be said. and they must be said. If they are not, then the goodbye will never come and it will remain incomplete.
slide in the carrots.
the two cup of unsaid things must be added carefully, do not let it splash or they may burn you.
cut the potatoes into cubes (does it really matter?). the plans, the apartments browsed online, the conversations about next year, the dog that was so close to existence- all of it must be gone.
add the potatoes.
slip in the bay leaf. it carries what you both remember differently. you must let it go after the soup is done. you must let go and return everything but the taste will remain.
add the clove, too much and the pride will make it worse. it will make it all acrid. do not mince it all. it must remain whole.
a handful of silence is necessary for this process. do not feel uncomfortable and force the conversation. let the words come to you.
taste and add some salt. the salt will enhance the flavour and reduce the bitterness if any.
let it simmer and wait for them to process it all.
remove the bay leaf.(I warned you)
pour into bowls and serve hot.
taste it, understand it, and do not blame yourself if it wasn’t up to your expectations. When leaving, do not clear the table right away; they may need time, and it is not a crime. Let them rest and be patient.
